Her Story

Back in mid-May, I noticed a stray dog wandering just outside our neighborhood. Sadly, we see strays more often than we’d like — but something about this one stopped me in my tracks. Maybe she reminded me of a dog my mom had when I was a kid, or maybe it was the look in her eyes. Whatever it was, she tugged hard at my heart.

She was terrified — wouldn’t let anyone close. I started bringing food and water, leaving it where she could find it. Over time, I’d spot her and gently guide her back to the food. Then, one day… she was gone. I felt a pit in my stomach.

After searching online, I discovered she’d been trapped by the City of Surprise and sent to the county shelter. My wife and I drove down immediately. There she was — that same scared little black dog with brown highlights. We knew right then we couldn’t leave without her.

We named her Guinness, after my mom’s favorite beer due to her colors. ❤️

We adopted her knowing it wouldn’t be easy. We already have two Labs, and Guinness came with fear, trauma, and three broken canine teeth — silent reminders of whatever she endured before us. But we wanted to give her a chance.

Since then, we’ve done everything we can — trainers, structured walks, slow introductions. Guinness has made so much progress. She’s silly, loyal, and loves her walks and runs. She’s become my little shadow — my “Velcro dog.” She absolutely loves dog toys and belly rubs, and her goofy side comes out more every day.

But the truth is, she’s still anxious when I’m gone, and the energy of our Labs makes it hard for her to relax-they have to be separated all the time. I travel often, and despite all our love and effort, she deserves a calmer home than we can provide right now.

This is incredibly hard to write as Guinness has stolen my entire family’s hearts, but I’m hoping to find someone or a family who knows her breed-Belgain Malinois and can give Guinness what she truly needs — a peaceful, loving home with people around most of the time and no other high anxiety dogs.

I’ll gladly cover all her expenses — food, vet care, toys — and even help with pet sitting if desired.

If you or someone you know could be that person, please reach out. Guinness has been through so much, and she deserves a life full of safety, love, and comfort. 🖤

From Lisa: Strengths

  • Loves most adult humans but she has a sense for people she doesn’t like or trust.
  • Loyal to one chosen person and loves to cuddle with her chosen one. If her chosen one is gone then she will seek out another familiar human being in the house to sit near.
  • Loves long walks twice a day because she won’t seek out exercise on her own, but has alot of energy to burn.
  • Loves playing with her toys (fetch, tug of war, finding the squeeker).
  • Loves to wrestle
  • Loves to eat, especially protein.
  • Has very entertaining zoomies that just melts your heart.
  • Learning commands (sit, come, heel, place, stop)
  • Has overcome adversity but has alot of anxiety as a result. She was a stray with front teeth rubbed down to nubs of about ⅛” and 3 canines broken in half. However, this doesn’t require any special diet as she will eat wet and dry food, as well as snack sticks. She has a few scars on her head/face. She kept her tail between her legs for about the first 2 weeks of us taking her in, but now her tail only goes between her legs when she gets anxious.
  • Sleeps in a crate throughout the night as long as the crate is in the owner’s room.
  • House trained and uses a doggy door, but doesn’t bark to let you know that she needs to go outside if she’s locked inside and has no way out. If she wants you to go out with her, she will try and jump in your lap-that is her way of saying please come outside with me.

Areas To Work On

  • Doesn’t run or exercise on her own, but has a lot of energy to burn
  • Determine how she is around kids
  • Anxiety for the first 15-30 minutes when chosen one is gone
  • Crate training when owners leave the house. She does way better if not locked in a crate, but locked in an open room. Can be left alone ~3 hours at a time.
